Globe and Mail: Backwards Writing
An illustration for the February 9 2012 issue of the Globe and Mail, in the Facts and Arguments section. It accompanies an article by Hope Smith, who writes about being left-handed and creativity — and her nifty party trick, which is the ability to write backwards (like Leonardo da Vinci used to do). What made this illustration job particularly fun was the fact that the writer is left-handed, the art director who assigned this to me was left-handed, while I myself am left-handed.

Globe and Mail: Dickens
When I was asked to do a portrait of Charles Dickens for the cover of the January 28 2012 Books section of the Globe and Mail newspaper, I came up with the concept of Dickens as phoenix, rediscovered by each generation of readers (or reread after a gap of many years, as is the case in the article). Read the story here.

An illustration for the May 3 2011 edition of The Globe and Mail, for a lovely Facts and Arguments piece about the writer's fond memories of baking with her nana — and how the Mixmaster she inherited from her was a reminder of many happy hours spent in the kitchen. Read the story here.
-

A collaborative piece for the April 2011 issue of Fast Company — I created the illustration, and the art director added the text inside the scrolls. This is a scan of the print result, as it was all done long distance!

-
Texas Monthly: Guilty Eating
This appeared in the February 2009 issue of Texas Monthly, accompanying a very funny article by Sarah Bird, who writes about her experience of eating out at a very posh restaurant, generating feelings of guilt (eating grandly during an economic recession) and then feelings of hunger (a dozen tiny courses left her longing for a solid serving of mac and cheese).

-
Globe and Mail: Remembrance Day
Globe and Mail illustration for a Remembrance Day story. The writer relates how when he was a child his mother would cover his mouth with her hand to show how he looked like her brother from the nose up. My concept was to tie the past and present together in this piece, with the family resemblance being the link.
-
Profit Magazine: Weathering Business Storms
Illustration for the October 2008 issue of Profit Magazine, for a short interview piece with entrepreneurs about mistakes they've made while establishing their businesses, and what they've learned from them.
